Description
AMERICAN, POSSIBLY VIRGINIA, SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) STILL-LIFE PAINTING, oil on academy board, depicting pansies in an earthenware vase, inscribed verso "Probably from the home / of Aunts Minnie, Mattie & May / Garst, near Hanging Rock, Salem, VA / Probably painted by May". Housed in a period oak frame. Together with a brass stencil for "John Garst, Jr. Salem, Va" and an uncounted group of found objects from the Garst family. Fourth quarter 19th century. 8" x 15 1/4" sight, 12" x 19 1/4" OA.
Good condition with minor cupping to board, light abrasion and surface loss at middle right edge. Frame with minor wear. Others in good as-found condition.
