  • Condition
Very good overall condition, but with flaws, The covers (app. 5.25" x 7.75"), are structurally sound, with no loose or detached boards, and no significant stains. The leather spines with five raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations, have wear, most shallow, to their ends, and some crackling at the sides. All the lettering is legible and bright. The spines are straight and securely attached. The marbled boards have some scuffs but no prominent stains, and little color fade. The insides are also in good condition, though there are a number of page edges that have wear, mostly shallow, to their edges, from having been cut open improperly. A small number have deeper tears, with material missing. None of this damage extends into any printed areas. The bookplates of Charlotte Helen Newberry, attached to two front inside covers, and pencil notations to some end pages, are the only extraneous elements. There are creases to the lower outside corners of two small groups of pages. Most pages have none. Each of the ten color frontispiece illustrations are in excellent condition, with no stains, fade or tears. The many black and white illustrations are in the same condition. The gilt page tops are scuffed but with no tears or like damage. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the set conditions.
