RUTHERFORD MARGARET: (1892-1972) English Character Actress, Academy Award winner. Series of three T.Ls.S. and an A.L.S., Margaret Rutherford, four pages (total), 8vo, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, February 1965 - May 1970, all to Mrs. H. Holderness. Rutherford writes an appreciative series of letters to her correspondent, in part, 'Your approval and enthusiasm always meant much to me and we miss you and your nice husband more than I can say when we go up to the Royal Standard. Nevertheless, what a very charming successor you have: he is creating a wonderful friendly centre there, and we find our visits once again most stimulating' (20th February 1965), 'How kind of you to think of writing to me! I do thank you from my heart…I am making good progress & hope to get about soon' (12th November 1967), 'Thank you so much for your good wishes on my Birthday….We have happy memories of your hospitality, my Husband and I, and are still hoping to look in on you…' (20th May 1970). Two of the letters are accompanied by the original envelopes. Together with a small 8vo folding Christmas greetings card signed ('our love, Margaret & Stringer Davis') by Rutherford to the inside in bold blue fountain pen ink beneath a printed greeting, and also including a T.L.S., J. B. Stringer Davis, by Stringer Davis (1899-1973, English Character Actor, husband of Rutherford), one page, 8vo, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, 13th July 1965, to Mrs. H. Holderness. Davis writes on behalf of his wife and sends her thanks to his correspondent, remarking 'She is much better and succeeded in playing from the Wednesday night right through to the end of the week, including the two Saturday shows. She is still working from the clinic and benefitting very much from the expert treatment….' Accompanied by the original envelope. VG, 6
