Description
Staffordshire figure, Benjamin Franklin as "The Old English Gentleman", craquelure glaze, some chips and small paint loss, bearing marks and related number from the Carborundum Museum of Ceramics, approx 16"h, 6"w, 5"d, 3.75lbs *Note: "A famous early nineteenth-century Stafforshire statuette, easily recognized as [Benjamin] Franklin, was labelled [sic] "An Old English Gentleman" on many of the copies despite their close resemblance to Franklin. Presumably the artifice was adopted because the producers had oversold the Franklin market in the United States and were trying to adapt their merchandise for home consumption.
