Description
Carved wooden mask with a highly "cubistic: aesthetic and signs of use and wear. From The Dogon of Mali, West Africa. Among the Dogon, such masks are identified to the baboon or monkey masks. It is during the Dama masquerade that different types of monkeys are invited to perform. These monkey masks include "Dege" that refers to the 'black' monkey. The Dogon believe that the monkey mask reflects the 'wild' side of mankind, uncivilized, anti-social and dangerous. The mask measures 12 x 6.5 inches. A metal display stand will also be included.
