Description
Gold, China. Qing (1644 – 1911), possibly older
This shizi is lying down just like any normal, mortal dog. But, what makes this lion dog special is the clearly flaming tassel at the end of its tail as well as the barbells which hang down over its mouth. This shizi miniature is exceptionally complex and filigree in its composition!
Note: in China a real Lion Dog has been bred – the Pekingese!
Expertise: Wolfmar Zacken
Very fine, antique, gold filigree-work jewelry from China
All the following, fantastically crafted decorative pieces offered are distinguished by their supremely fine, down to the detail filigree workmanship. They are pieced together from tiny golden wires, accordingly delicate and very light. They are so unbelievably finely crafted that one would probably do best to examine these extraordinary pieces with a magnifying glass. We know of nothing comparable. The motifs are typically Chinese: appearing multiple times is the magical phoenix, one of the four heavenly, mythological creatures of China and a symbol of the empress, in particular for the women, who probably once wore this jewelry in their hair (at least the intended use of this jewelry). Most likely these pieces all stem from the same or from related workshops, as indicated by some tiny details such as, for example, the “little crown”, which could either be a feather crown or also just simply a particular blossom, like the lotus blossom. Here, given that the motif came to China across Tibet, a connection to the lotus-shaped crowns of early Indian kings might be present. All the pieces described depict particular animals, masterfully executed in their extremely subtle decorative work
Provenance: From an private Austrian collection
Dimensions: LENGTH 4,3 CM
