Description
This is a very fine beaded crown from the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria, West Africa. Featuring several very well made avian (Bird) images and a stylized face. Such crowns were traditionally worn by the Oba (Chief or King /see last image) After being consecrated as leader, a Yoruba oba must not reveal his face to the public. Instead, he wears an ade or adenla. Oba crowns typically feature at least one stylized face depicted in applied bead work and designed to identify the king when appearing in public. Some examples of crowns have more than one face. The bird images relate to creation myths and a symbol of the Oba's power. This Crown Measures 18.5 x 12 inches ( on display stand it is 30 inches tall.) This measurement does not count the hanging strands of beads. * a Durable metal display stand is included with your purchase.
