Description
Northeast Mexico, State of Coahuila, dated April of 1909. Ex-votos are devotional paintings on either canvas or tin, as we see in this example, that present a visual as well as a text to offer thanks to a specific saint with a brief narrative. This particular ex-voto offers gratitude to Nuestra Madre Senora de la Candelaria or Our Lady of Candelaria, also known as Morenita (originally the patron saint of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the southern coast of Morocco, but later adopted by the faithful of New Spain or Mexico). According to the narrative, la Senora Manuela Viramontes de Rodriguez experienced a dangerous and near fatal birth. In the painting la Senora and her husband Jesus M. Rodriguez kneel before the altar of the Lady of the Candelaria giving prayerful thanks. The painting presents a touching moment as Our Lady of the Candelaria, standing upon the altar surrounded by lit candles, holds the baby Jesus and La Senora presents her newborn child. Size: 14" x 10"
A general translation of the text is as follows: "In the month of April of 1909, la Senora Manuela Viramontes de Rodriguez experienced a dangerous birth that so disullusioned the doctors, they it said could have caused her to die. They invoked she and her husband Jesus M. Rodriguez to Our Lady of the Candelaria who they would see upon her sanctuary/altar in a small chapel, where to the astonishment of the doctor and everyone present, healing without any danger would transpire. As a testamonial and an offering for the great favor they received, they offer this retablo. The future state of Coahuila."
