Description
A very large Sumerian/Jemdat Nasr shell amulet of a stylized feline, c. 3200 - 2800 BC, of classic shape with ovoid head and large circular eyes, the notch on the top of the head separates for the ears. Made of the rarely encountered material mother-of-pearl, the iconic, in demand, early cat amulet has light deposits and minor weathering; vertical suspension hole through back. 2 1/4 in x 1 1/2 in (5.7 x 4.8 cm). Very well-preserved with light deposits. Ex-East Coast private; Ex- California Museum of Ancient Art, acquired 1989 (0435).
