Description
American School, early 20th century. "Capture of Slave Ship Emanuela by HMS Brisk", oil on canvas, indistinct inscription to lower left (possibly "EDDY"). An early 20th century painting after a 1910 illustration published by Arthur Henry Clark (British/American, 1868-1951), depicting British Royal Navy clipper ship "HMS Brisk" (launched 1851) capturing the salve ship Emanuela (or Manuela) on August 10, 1860, with various inscriptions to verso including "From van Nevelts Collection." Framed approximately 38" x 28". Unframed approximately 20" x 30". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Judy McLean, Mills River, North Carolina.
