Description

Samuel Marti & Cie (French, active beginning 1860), retailed by H. Muhr's & Sons (Philadelphia,1880s), circa 1889. A Louis XV style gilt bronze mantle clock having a artichoke finial over a porcelain dome in Rose Pompadour ground with central landscape scene, the case with circular beveled door glass with hinged bezel enclosing the conforming porcelain dial with black Arabic numerals and floral painted center signed above the six "H. MUHR'S & SONS/PHILIDELPHIA/MADE IN FRANCE" above a panel with scene of courting couple, the sides with simulated hung panels headed with masks and raised on front scrolling legs with paw feet. The movement stamped with S.Marti et Cie, Medaille d'Argent, 1889". Also "MADE IN FRANCE" "2120 42". Approximate height 15.75", width 8.87", depth 5". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Susan E. Yeomans of S. Battery, Charleston, South Carolina (a descendant of former Governor of South Carolina Ibra C. Blackwood and his wife, Margaret Hodges; former President of the United States of America, Grover Cleveland; and former Governor of South Carolina, Carroll Ashmore Campbell Jr.). Note: Muhr & Sons was a firm making watch cases in Philadelphia in the 1880s. By 1884, it had evolved into H. Muhr's Sons, manufacturers of Crown, Excelsoir and Lion gold-filed cases, as well as distributed other cases.
