Description
Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Federal Drape Design, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base and tooled shoulder, decorated completely around the shoulder with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Impressed on the front with the cobalt-higlighted maker's mark, "COMMERAWS", and on the reverse with the word, "STONEWARE". Excellent small size and unusual form, featuring profuse stamping of African-American potter Thomas Commeraw's classic decorative treatments. A large Y-shaped line to base area. Some additional tight lines to foot, extending partway onto underside. A faint, approximately 2" line from rim. Base chips. H 9 1/2".
