Description
Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Running Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA", New York State origin, circa 1865, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a bird with fan-shaped tail, "running" atop a stylized branch. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent form and size to decoration. Two minor chips to one handle. A chip to opposite handle. A 6 1/2" X-shaped line at base on reverse. A Y-shaped line on underside. An in-the-firing contact mark to tail, including a small piece of adhered clay. A small, glazed-over surface chip to tail.
