OSCAR BERGER, Famous 20th Century Jewish Artist, Caricaturist and Cartoonist.
This is an original, pencil sketch illustration, of one of Oscar Berger's famous Presidential Subjects, Richard Nixon, Very Fine. This wonderful caricature measures 10" x 8.75" and is drawn on heavy art paper, being Signed, "(Oscar) Berger" at the lower right. This sketch may have been drawn at an address before the American Medical Association, as the initials, "AMA" appear faintly on the podium. A monogram written in blue ink appears above Berger's signature, perhaps indicating an editor's approval of the sketch. This monogram was so heavily written that the point of the pen poked through the paper at the end. A great caricature of a bushy eyebrowed Nixon, signed by a prominent modern artist.

Oscar Berger (1901-1997) was born in Czechoslovakia, studied art in Paris and Berlin and became a cartoonist in Prague. In Berlin, he secured an assignment with one of the largest Berlin daily newspapers and was one of the few journalists admitted to the 1923 Munich trial that followed Hitler's abortive putsch. Later, when Hitler came to power, Berger's cartoons angered the Nazi leader, and Berger was forced to leave the country. After spells in Budapest, Paris, and Geneva, where he attended numerous sessions at the League of Nations, he settled in London in 1935, and worked for the Daily Telegraph. His work subsequently appeared in Life, the New York Times, the New York Herald Tribune and Le Figaro, among numerous other publications. During the 1950s, Berger attended many sessions at the United Nations and illustrated virtually every important world leader to be seen there.
