This lot consists of the volume entitled "Kerckelijcke historie, vande Gereformeerde kercken/ vergadert in eenige valeyen van Piedmont, en haere nagebueren, eertijds genaemt Waldensen" by Pierre Gilles, translated into Dutch by Gillis Van Breen (Amsterdam: By Jacques Borsse, 1657).

This work of ecclesiastical history relates to the Reformation and reform churches, especially the Waldensians--the Christian movement founded by Peter Waldo circa 1173, which merged into the larger Protestant movement with the outbreak of the Reformation (Wikipedia). The Waldensians appear to have settled in the duchy of Piedmont, Italy, about thirty miles from Turin. Gilles was a Waldensian historian, an authority on the Waldensians and their activities during the Reformation (The Waldenses: Sketches of the Evangelical Christians of The Valleys of Piedmont).

This antique volume is bound in full vellum, with title written on the spine. An engraved title page adorns the front of the volume, and a woodcut vignette appears on the title page. Elaborate engraved initials appear occasionally, and the text is printed in double columns.

The vellum front cover of this volume is toned, and mild soiling and scattered faint moisture markings appear on the front and rear of the volume. The lettering of the title is mildly faded. The binding of the volume is sound. Minor edge tearing is present to the front paste-down, and pencil notes appear on the front and rear endpapers. The interior of the volume is largely clean and bright, with only occasional spots of foxing and very slight rippling to pages.
