Item Details
Description
This lot consists of the volume "De Graaven van Holland" by Pieter Langendijk, spelled Langendyk in this volume (Haarlem: By J. Bosch, 1745).

Pieter Langendijk (25 July 1683 - 9 or 18 July 1756) was a damask weaver, city artist, dramatist, and poet. Langendijk was given free accommodations in Proveniershuis in Haarlem for his agreement to write a history of the city, the previous history of which had been written in 1628 by Samuel Ampzing.

This volume is bound in full, gilt-embellished leather, and contains two parts, separately paginated, each with its own title page. The title pages are printed in red and black. The work is adorned with an engraved frontispiece, as well as identical engraved vignettes to the title pages. 32 engraved portraits of nobles appear in the volume, by H. Spilman after T. Jelgersma. These portraits include Willem III (William of England); Dirk VI, Count of Holland; and Gertrude of Saxon.

This antique volume displays external wear, with faint cracking to the spine and spine edges, as well as rubbing and mild scuffing to the covers. The hinges are cracking, and the text block is beginning to crack near the beginning of the second volume. A previous owner's signature appears on the front flyleaf. Faint moisture markings, smudging, and occasional soiling are visible in the volume's interior, as well as some minor rippling to the pages. The plates are generally well-preserved, with some minor toning and moisture appearing occasionally.
