Description
A choice Near Eastern bronze finial, c. 1200 – 800 BC, comprised of two parts, the lower portion a tubular shaped support surmounted and upper portion in the form of two rampant lions who support a human head on their forepaws. The lions are modeled with slender proportions and beautifully detailed. H: 9 ½ in (23.5 cm). Nicely patinated on with a custom rectangular base. Cf. Moorey, Catalogue of Ancient Persian Bronzes in the Ashmolean Museum, (Oxford, 1971), p. 152, no. 173 for a similar example. Ex Chesire, UK private collection.
