Description
Mennis, John; Smith, James. Facetiae. Musarum Deliciae: or, The Muses Recreation, Conteining Severall Pieces of Poetique Wit by Sr. J. M. and Ja. S., 1656; Wit Restor'd, in Severall Select Poems, Not Formerly Publish't, 1658; Wits Recreations, Seclected from the Finest Fancies of Moderne Muses, with a Thousand Out-landish Proverbs, 1640. The Whole Diligently Compared with the Originals; with all the Wood Engravings, Plates, Memoirs and Notes. (Two Volumes, Complete). London: John Camden Hotten, [1874]. New Edition. 7 1/8" X 4 5/8". xx, 339pp; xxvii, 530pp. No date of publication, the 1874 edition, a facsimile reprint of Thomas Park's 1817 edition. Halfbound in brown morocco, with marbled paper over boards. Spines lettered and decorated in gilt, with five raised bands. Heavy edgewear, with corners bumped and rubbed to boards and scattered rubbing. Top edge gilt. Matching marbled endpapers. Ad and short catalog of the volumes pasted into flyleaf of Vol. I. Both bindings tight and sound. Pages clean and unmarked, but for some occasional pencilled marks, light foxing to ending pages of Vol. II, and a pencilled reference list to rear blank leaf of Vol. I (from comparing to letters, this list does not appear to be the work of Thomas Bird Mosher). Bookplate of publisher Thomas Bird Mosher to both front pastedowns. Thomas Bird Mosher was the publisher of The Bibelot, and his press was "the granddaddy of small presses" in the U.S., according to Philip R. Bishop's article "Extra Binding and The Mosher Books—An Overview from the Bishop Collection" (December 29, 2008), which you can find on the IOBA website, along with a detailed account of this bookplate. Very good. Hardcover. [1860]
