Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An incredible cast silver eagle with excellent details of feathers, four-clawed feet, eyes, and beak. The bird is posed powerfully, perched with its tail feathers back, where they provide support so that the figure stands independently. Eagles were powerfully symbolic to the Romans: the soul of the emperor was incarnate in an eagle, and mourners released eagles above imperial funerary pyres to carry the soul to heaven. Eagles were also associated with the Roman legions. A beautiful silver item like this would have belonged to someone elite, possibly a high ranking member of the Roman military or someone in the imperial court. Size: 2.25" L x 1.1" W x 1.75" H (5.7 cm x 2.8 cm x 4.4 cm) (75.9 g)
