Description
Coastal Virginia or England, circa 1800. The table is crafted entirely of American Black Walnut and features a profusely carved three board top centered by back to back leaves which resemble, and could possibly be, tobacco leaves. The perimeter is composed of eight circular segments to house dishes for service. The acanthus-carved base leads to three legs, which are carved brilliantly at the knee and back of the leg, and terminates in pad feet. The base meets the top with a dovetailed box which is indicative of certain Norfolk Virginia/Edenton, North Carolina Queen Anne tilt top tables of the period. Wood analysis has been performed and all wood is American Black Walnut. It is possible the table is a transitional piece venturing into the neoclassical, or simply a special order incorporating profuse carving on a more tradition form. All element are original and table is in as found condition. Note: This piece was discovered in Charleston, South Carolina and was said to have been passed down from a prominent Richmond, Virginia private family.
