BIOGRAPHY: Deng Shaoyi (b. 1935, China) is known for his watercolor paintings depicting traditional Chinese landscapes and scenes of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. He was born in Chongqing and graduated in 1964 from the Oil Painting Department of the Sichuan Academy of Arts where one of his paintings (‘Folk Song’) resides in their permanent collection. His painting titled, ‘All Rights Belong to the Farm Association’ is included in the permanent collection of the Chinese Cultural Revolution History Museum and the painting titled, ‘We Have Met Chairman Mao,’ completed in 1974 received over 30 reviews between 1974 – 1976. In 2014 this painting was sold by Poly International Auction Co. for $363,510USD.
In 1980 Shaoyi began a series of landscape paintings depicting the Three Gorges. In 1986 these were exhibited at a private showing at the Beijing Central Bookstore. In 1982 he became a professor of oil painting at the Sichuan Academy of Arts. Beginning in 1996 Shaoyi researched and sketched the Three Gorges scenery and in 2000 was invited by the Humboldt Arts Council, California to be Artist in Residence. At this time, the Arts Council acquired paintings, scroll paintings and artist tools belonging to the artist. In 2000 Shaoyi, in conjunction with the Morris Graves Museum of Art and the Humboldt Arts Council published the exhibition catalog ‘Deng Shaoyi: Three Gorges – Yangtze River’ Refs.
