Indian Bronze Khandoba Form of Shiva With Mhalsa

Item Details

Description

18th century Indian bronze sculpture from Maharashtra depicting Khandoba (a form of Shiva worshipped in a shrine in Jejuri, near Pandharpur) with his wife Mhalsa seated on his knee. This bronze was mounted on a horse (now missing) and held in place by the loop on its back, which is now used to hold it on a small custom made stand. Khandoba is holding his usual attributes: a sword, a trident, a drum and a bowl. Excellent crisp casting for that type of sculpture, beautiful dark patina with some green incrustation, very pleasant feel of age to the piece. Part of an old British collection. Height of the bronze 2 11/16 inches.
