Dewey Reception & Committee in NYC King Moses. Quarto. 152 pp; profuse b/w illustrations. Original green pictorial cloth. VG, light rubbing at top & bottom of spine & corners, else a clean, tight, unmarked copy. This book focuses on the more than one thousand citizens chosen by Mayor Robert Anderson Van Wyck to arrange the New York City reception to celebrate Admiral George Dewey's victory in the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines in 1898. Included are a brief life of Admiral Dewey, a story of the battle of Manila Bay, and a sketch of the Triumphal Arch, and also a profusely illustrated narrative of the three days' ceremonies in New York. At the time, this was the grandest reception ever given to a nation's hero. Most of the book is given to portraits of 845 of the 1,152 citizens chosen by the mayor as members of the Dewey Reception Committee. The portraits are arranged nine to a page.
