Description
Rookwood Mahogany (Standard) glaze vase with incised vines and blossoms done in 1885 by Laura Fry. The yellow glaze over red clay has produced some Tiger Eye effect around the rim and shoulder. Marks include Rookwood in block letters, the date, shape number 215, G for ginger clay (even though this vase is made of red clay), a wheel ground X, the incised monogram of the artist and Cincinnati Art Museum acquisition numbers 337:00 in red paint. Height 5 3/4 inches. Fine overall crazing and marked as a factory second for several tiny glaze zits. Listed in Burt, “2,292 Pieces of early Rookwood Pottery in the Cincinnati Art Museum in 1916” a listing of pieces on loan from Rookwood, some beautiful and some interesting from a technical point of view. This is item 31 on page 47 and references the presence of “slight T.E.” for Tiger Eye effect.
