Description
Details: HONDIUS, JODOCUS. Nova Africæ Tabula. 20th century. Color printed with hand-coloring on laid paper. Nine decorative inset views of important African places across the top, ten inset portraits of African peoples. Image: 16 1/2 x 23". Sheet size: 19 1/2 x 24 1/2".
Handsomely colored copy of Hondius' great Africa map.
Originally published in 1617 during the Golden Age of Dutch culture, this was the sum total of European geographical information about Africa which, interestingly, included Timbuktu, a good deal of the Niger, Congo and Zambezi Rivers, as well as of course the Nile. Much of the interior was necessarily imagined. The calligraphy and decorative ships and sea monsters are superb.
