Description
Central Asia, India, Odisha (formerly Orissa), Mughal Empire, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. An amazing, complete copy of the Kama Sutra painted and written on large leaves, preserved and mounted in four framed glass cases. The artist has used fine black ink to write and draw, with black, red, and white pigment used to color the imagery. The handwriting is beautiful, evenly spaced and perfect, while the drawings are detailed and informative. Each leaf has been pierced through the center and they were originally bound together. It is incredibly rare to find a complete version of the Kama Sutra because many of them were broken up and individual pages sold. Size of each frame: 23" W x 33" H (58.4 cm x 83.8 cm)
The Kama Sutra is perhaps the most famous work on human sexuality in the world, an ancient Sanskrit series of proscriptions about love and desire as well as a how-to-manual for sexual positions. Originally compiled from varied teachings by the philosopher Vatsyayana around the 2nd or 3rd century CE, the book has been continuously "in print" since. In contrast to many historical European texts on sexuality, the Kama Sutra emphasizes that both men and women should be skilled in carnal pleasures in order to make a relationship work.
Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-private R. Buntin collection, Hawaii, USA
