Description
Persian (Iran), 20th century (circa 1920s), Kashan "Mohtasham" (Motashem) pictorial figural hand knotted Manchester wool and silk carpet. All design elements rendered in woven silk--making up at least 20% of overall. Image possibly depicting Darius the Great, the third king of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. Exquisite rug with numerous figures in various poses including riding on horseback with weapons, on elephants, seated, surrounded with flowers, and inscription panels on cream colored field. Fine and rare with approximately 225 knots per square inch (considered top grade for Kashan rugs). Measures approximately 5' 6" x 8' 4". Provenance: From the Estate of Sophie Lilly H. Williams of Atlanta, Georgia.
