Second state, with 'Potest' in left medallion on p. 108, Vol. 2 (changed from the Post Est of the first state). Brunet says that the book is remarkable for the elegance of its decoration and insists that it is more correct than generally recognized. Brunet III, 320. Bookplates of Henry Pilkington on the front pastedowns, that of Harvard College, bequest of Charles Sumner, class of 1830, on the rear pastedowns. This would be the radical Republican Senator from Massachusetts who was nearly killed on the Senate floor by a South Carolina Democrat in 1856 two days after delivering an anti-slavery speech.
