Although map is dated 1839, it came from the 1848 edition of Smith’s Concise and Practical System of Geography. The map is colored to reflect Texas as part of the United States. The population of the United States is based on the 1840 census which was just over 17 million. The new state of Texas is delineated with its vast boundaries extending north along the Rio Grande to the Arkansas River (an area included within Texas until the Compromise of 1850). Alaska is shown as still being part of Russia. Topographical features are shown and distances to various parts of the world are given. Major cities, towns, water routes (many with their lengths provided), mountains and Military Forts are located. Indian Tribes are also well located throughout the map. Occasional foxing with bb-size spot. Vivid period hand-coloring.
