Rare Gorham Isis Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs, 1870
Item Details
Description
This is a beautiful and very rare pair of sterling silver sugar tongs, made in the coveted Isis Pattern by Gorham. This unique pattern was designed c. 1870 by their lead designer George Wilkinson. It features a streamlined and lean design, with simple geometric detailing on handles. Connecting the outside of the spoon bowls to each handle is a coiled cobra with vulture wings, the traditional symbol of the United Kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt worn on the Pharaoh's crown. A revival in Egyptian design became popular at the end of the 1860's and Gorham's Isis pattern reflects this Egyptian taste.; These tongs measure 4 3/4" x 1 1/8" x 3/4" and weigh 19.5 grams, or 0.63 Troy ounces. The pattern is a bit worn (see photos), but this piece is in very good condition overall. It is monogramed. It is marked "STERLING" and with the Gorham maker's marks.

Gorham Silver was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham, in partnership with Henry Webster, in Providence, Rhode Island. Originally a manufacturer of coin-silver flatware, the company began focusing on sterling silver in 1868, producing everything from flatware such as knives, forks, and spoons to hollowware pieces ranging from coffee pots to serving bowls. Gorham even created signature show pieces in the Martele style, most famously a silver dressing table and cushioned stool, which beat Tiffany in the silver furniture category at the 1900 Paris World Fair.
