Description
Antique print; pristine hand colored copper engraving Photographed on a black background. Printed the same year Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem “The Raven” was published in New York City. William S. Curtis (1746-1799) was an English botanist and entomologist. Curtis began his career as an apothecary, before turning his attention to botany and other natural history. He founded The Curtis Museum, a local history museum in Hampshire, England. Copper Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto copper by cutting grooves into it. An impression is created on the copper plate, which is then filled with opaque ink. When paper is pressed into the plate, it creates raised and colored areas.
