BRITISH SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) FOLK ART NAUTICAL PAINTING, oil on board, finely detailed depiction of a three-masted steam-powered iron-clad vessel, two large-caliber gun turrets below deck, plying the waters on a clear day, inscribed at lower edge "HMS CAPTAIN FOUNDERED OFF CAPE FINNISTERRE SEP 7 1870", signed "SB" lower left. Housed in a 19th-century molded birdseye maple frame with gilt liner. Circa 1870. 9" x 14 1/2" sight, 13 3/4" x 19" OA.
Good visual condition with scattered craquelure, abrasions, and areas of discoloration. Frame with minor wear.
Provenance: From a private West Virginia collection.
Catalogue Note: The HMS Captain was an elaborate gun-ship of novel conception completed in April of 1870 that capsized in August of that same year as a result of poor construction and design. Nearly 500 sailors lost their lives in the tragic episode.
