Description
AMERICAN OR ENGLISH CHIPPENDALE CARVED MAHOGANY TILT-TOP TEA TABLE, impressive one-board circular top, oak battens affixed to underside, above dovetailed box over robust baluster-turned standard raised on tripodal base with cabriole legs having reeded knees, carved C-scrolls, and padded slipper feet. Fine old surface with rich color. Possibly Northeastern NC or Southeastern VA. Circa 1770. 28" H, 35 1/2" D (top).
Excellent overall condition with minor wear, some staining/discoloration to top.
Literature: See Bivins - The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina 1700-1820, p. 152, fig. 569, and Hurst/Prown - Southern Furniture 1680-1830, p. 317, pl. 99 for similar examples attributed to the Edenton area.
Provenance: From a private West Virginia collection.
