Sir Lionel Arthur Lindsay (Australian, 1874-1961) "A Bridge, Extremadura". A rare and very hard to find Drypoint Etching printed in brown ink with plate tone, from one plate, only 75 proofs, 1927. Signed in pencil by the artist lower left. In frame under glass 18"x16.50"x.75. Image 10"x7". Weight 3 pds 2 oz. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of noted collector and Philanthropist Louis E. Stern (1886-1962) by descent. Art collector, attorney; New York, N.Y. Born in Balta, Russia, Stern joined his father in America ca. 1900, and earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1909. An avid patron of the arts, Stern's large collection was notable for its illustrated artists' books, prints, sculpture, ancient and primitive objects, and paintings, in particular his many works by Marc Chagall (he was Chagall's US attorney), Picasso, Braque and many more. Upon his death, his collections were given to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, his art library to Rutgers, and other additional items to the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. ARTIST: One of Australia's most renowned artists of the early twentieth century, Lionel Lindsay started his artistic career at the age of fifteen when he worked as a pupil assistant at the Melbourne Observatory (1889-1892). He then completed his studies at the National Gallery School, Melbourne. From 1903 to 1926, Lindsay was employed as an illustrative artist for the Sydney Evening News. After that period his art had gained and international reputation and he traveled and worked in such locations as England, India, North Africa and his favorite place, Spain. His original wood engravings and etchings were often commissioned and exhibited by the large London Publishing house, Colnaghi & Company.
