Francisco De Goya (Spanish 1746-1828) Amarga Presencia (Bitter Presence) Engraving, Plate 13 from the Disasters of War. Measures 6.60"x8". In Frame 21.5"x17.50". Weight 4 pds. From the 4th Edition of 275 made in the Calcographia. This edition was published in 1906 and was made in the Calcografia Nacional for the Real Academia in Madrid, Spain. The Fourth Edition is considered to be of better quality then the 3rd Edition. In 1803, Goya relinquished the plates to Charles IV, in return for a pension for his son. The plates remain with the Calcografia Nacional and have been used for restrikes over the years. PROVENANCE: From the Estate of noted collector and Philanthropist Louis E. Stern (1886-1962) by descent. Art collector, attorney; New York, N.Y. Born in Balta, Russia, Stern joined his father in America ca. 1900, and earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1909. An avid patron of the arts, Stern's large collection was notable for its illustrated artists' books, prints, sculpture, ancient and primitive objects, and paintings, in particular his many works by Marc Chagall (he was Chagall's US attorney), Picasso, Braque and many more. Upon his death, his collections were given to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, his art library to Rutgers, and other additional items to the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
