Description
A Soviet porcelain figure of an Afghan woman removing her veil, Lomonosov Factory, Leningrad, circa 1930. A young Afghan woman wearing a gold-embroidered wine-colored vest, and elaborate gold and jewelry with blue stones as well as brightly colored striped pants, removes her white and gold-embroidered veil. The sculpture modeled after a design by Elizaveta Tripolskaya (1881-1958), with impressed factory mark for sculpture with hammer, sickle, and cog and with iron red stamped export mark reading 'Made in Russia' in English. On this design, see Elvira Sametskaia, Sovetskii agitatsionnyi farfor, Moscow, 2004, pp. 310, 313 and T.N. Nosovich and I.P. Popova, Gosudarstvennyi farforovyi zavod, 1904-1944, St. Petersburg: Orkestr, 2005, p. 596. Dimensions: 8 1/2" h x 5 1/4" w (21.5 x 3.3 cm).
Recent archival studies have shown that Elizaveta Rodionovna Tripolskaya designed this model as part of a group of three Eastern figures while studying at Moscow's VKhUTEIN (Higher Art and Technical Institute, formed in part from the famous Stroganoff School). On Tripolskaya's work and the series, see Elvira Sametskaia, Sovetskii agitatsionnyi farfor, Moscow, 2004, pp. 310, 313 and T.N. Nosovich and I.P. Popova, Gosudarstvennyi farforovyi zavod, 1904-1944, St. Petersburg: Orkestr, 2005, p. 596.
