Description
Large Chinese Ming Reverse Blue and white Porcelain Dish, with a shallow rim, the center interior decorated hand painted in reversed blue underglazed design of parrots within pomegranate abundant and foliate, surrounded by four abundance encircled including peach and pomegranate on rim. The exterior decorated with lotus blossom and tendrils. The clay is fine and exquisite, the glaze smooth with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous. The underside remain unglazed revealled the orange ground with draker spots of firinf marks.
The pomegranate (shiliu ??) signifies the sixth month of the lunar calendar and, because of its many seeds, represents fertility, offspring and descendants.
For this reason, the pomegranate is an important symbol in Chinese marriages.
The first character (shi ?) has the same pronunciation as the word for "generations" (shi ?) and thus strengthens the meaning as generations of descendants.
Mark on under the exterior rim, shows six incised scripts -KaiShu- Characters, enclosed within white underglazed rectangular frame border, XuanDe Reign Period of Great Ming.
Dimension: 3-1/2" H x 21-3/4" Dia
