Magnificent 16th century desk, Italian.The upper section has in large latin letters:INVIDOS VIRTUTE SUPERBIS(Translation:"By virtue you will overcome the envious").Pieces of inlay missing, the large flat panel with the latin inscription can be lifted up(it's hinged)the main hinges for the flat desk board possibly replaced, some drawers with side moulding pieces missing,Evidence of candle burns on top of desk(Typically in the 16th century you would burn candles on the desk to have light for writing).The main panel when closed showing a panorama of buildings.The upper section with the latin inscription lifts up to reveal two more drawers.Some drawer pulls probably original and in the shape of birds, some pulls might be replacements but 19th century or earlier.No keys.Top section separates from lower section.Middle section separates from top and bottom section. Estate of John Markell, NYC, his mother was Isabella Markell, American artist, NYC.THe top section of the desk measures: 16" x 7" x 48", and the middle section with the drawers measures 15"x 25" x 47"and the last section measures 16" x 30"x 48".
