Description
ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. Early example of a D.S., Albert, one page, 12mo, Bonn, 1838, in German. The Prince's composition appears to be part of a university exercise, possibly in Latin or Philosophy, writing, in part, 'To the friend of friends, one will find friends in good times, but those are not my friends, but friends of my good times… These friends disappear in bad times… a great friendship… a strong defence against the power of misery. Real living friendship has its roots in striving and working for it together' further adding, 'Bonn, finishing work… Summer Semester, 1838' at the foot of the page. With a neat horizontal tear across the length at the head, not affecting text or signature, and very light age wear, otherwise VG Albert attended the University of Bonn, 1837-38, where he studied law, political economics, philosophy and the history of art. He played music and excelled at sport, especially fencing and riding. His tutors at Bonn included the philosopher Fichte and the poet Schlegel.
