Description
Autograph Letter Signed, “Griffith E. Morgan Co. C. 51st Penna Veteran Volunteers 1st Brigade 1st Division 9th Army Corps.” 1p. quarto, July 29, c. 1900, addressed to Lincoln historian John Boos, and reads in part: “...The only time I saw Abraham Lincoln was when our (9th Army Corps) was passing through Washington in April 1864 enroute to the Wilderness Campaign under Grant. He was standing on a balcony of Willards Hotel, 14 & Penna. Ave, reviewing us as we passed by, our Regiment gave him a marching salute; in memory I see him as he looked upon us, with his sad face; we knew not what was before us, He did. If (a little more than a year afterwards, the 23rd of May 1865) he had saw us march down the same avenue, burnt and bronzed by the sun, toughened by exposure to frost and rain, with muscles of steel and hearts of iron, tried in the fire of battles, and covered with the glory of success; I think that sad face would have lightened up with glory unspeakable...It was not given him the hand of the assassin put the love light out of his eyes, but not out of his heart...” VG.
