EARLY CONTINENTAL WOODEN DOLL IN ELABORATE SILK GOWN. 16 ½". Carved wooden doll has one-piece head and shapely torso, wooden arms with jointing at shoulders and elbows, separately sculpted fingers and nails, wooden legs with jointing at hips and knees, bare feet, deeply-sculpted flowing brown hair, enamel eyes, painted brows and lips, blushed cheeks, wears dark red and cream silk costume with lavish embroidery detail and trims, matching slippers. Commentary: Late 18th century; hand-sculpted doll with superb characterization, original finish, wonderful costume, left thumb repaired, red silk is very fragile and worn, otherwise very good condition.
