Description
CVRR locomotive bell from the Feb 28, 1880 fatal train wreck of a passenger train at the Witherspoon Bridge near Wood Falls between Mooers Falls & Altona, ht 12", dia 15", as well as a piece of the mounting bracket from the wreck- found in 1999 washing out of the culvert. The section of RR was originally part of the Ogdensburg & Lake Champlain RR. The Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad was founded in 1849 as the Northern Railroad running from Ogdensburg to Rouses Point, New York. The 118-mile (190 km) railroad was leased by rival, Central Vermont Railroad for several decades, ending in 1896.
