This elegant turn of the century sterling silver platter made by the American silver company Dominick and Haff of New York features a rare design of ocean tendrils, shell and star fish swirling forms. Sea anemones, and other lines that evoke underwater creatures form a pierced rim around the platter, creating an ocean world. The center of the silver plate is undulated and has a star like form that evokes the body of a star fish. In the center is a hand etched monogram of the letter "D". This is a truly remarkable example of the fine work made by Dominick and Haff. The Company was founded after the Civil War in 1868 and made very high end sterling holloware and flatware. Their platters take on organic designs, floral motifs; the repeating pattern motifs have crisp detail, high relief and impressive reticulated silver detail work. This plate is especially notable for its two layers of silver wall, or double wall, which required more highly skilled artisans, and results in a reppousé top with a soft silver base. In almost perfect condition except for one join where a separation of these layers is visible on the back. This is barely noticeable though, and not seen from the front. On the bottom the stamp confirms the silver maker as Dominick & Haff who used three interlinked geometric designs as the signature marks. The “925” indicates that the pieces are 92.5 percent pure silver, the number “1896” indicates the year the pieces were made and "B.H. STEIF CO." is the retailer, (originally from Nashville). The sterling silver-plate weighs 18 troy ounces or 560 grams and measures 12 inches in diameter by 2 inches tall. This is a rare and wonderful example of sterling silver work from Dominick and Haff.

Dominick and Haff was founded in New York in 1872. Soon afterwards, it garnered a reputation as a pioneering creator of silver wares. The company’s success allowed it to acquire the assets of other manufacturers, including the dies of Adam & Shaw, in 1880. The firm was sold to Reed & Barton in 1928. Among its notable silver patterns are Century, Labors of Cupid, English Antique, and Rococo.
