Green versus Red Folk Art Chess Set, circa 1970s
Poland
Carved, painted wood
Other than the Knights, all figures wear crowns or hats. Red side Bishops are distinguished by a black spherical shape adorning the top of their pointed hats, while the green side Bishops' flat-top elongated hats are extended with a spear head. Set is painted in the distinctive style of dots and linear patterning employed by Polish self taught artists from the early 1960s to the mid 1980s.
King is 15.2 cm and Pawn 9.5 cm high
