Lot Essay:
J.E. Gourgue is one of Haiti's most celebrated and renowned painters of the 20th century. At age 17 Gourgue was encouraged by Hector Hyppolite to join Port-au-Prince's Centre d'Art.
Notes: Original hand carved Haitian frame - with snake and cross motifs. Usually frames so elaborately carved are seen mostly on paintings by Angel Bottello. This frame was most likely carved by a specific frame maker in Haiti during the 1960's.
