Description
Franklin Brooke Voss ( American 1880-1953) Oil on Canvas - Rooster. Unusual for Voss who specialized in Champion Horses. Undoubtedly someone's champion. Signed by the artist lower right and dated 1931. In the original period gilt wood frame with the original Casson Galleries, Boston label en verso. In Frame measures 16"x18"x2". Weight is 3 pds. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Sumner Pingree Jr, Brays Island Plantation, SC. Franklin Brooke Voss (1880-1953) came from a family of horsemen and fox hunters. His father was a founding member of the Rockway Hunt Club in Long Island and his uncle Joseph was a founding member of the Elkridge Hunting Club in Maryland. As a boy, Voss rode to the hounds with both these hunts, and was a regular steeplechase rider. He studied for seven years at the Art Student’s League in New York, where George Bridgman was his teacher, specializing in horse portraits. In the 1930's the Voss family moved to Maryland where Franklin, his brother and their sister all lived together on a small farm near the Elkridge-Hartford hunt club. Franklin was an active fox hunter as well as a steeplechaser. He foxhunted and rode races in New York and Maryland, and painted racehorses and hunting horses for his sportsmen friends Between 1920 and 1950, he completed some 500 commissions for prominent sporting families. He was commissioned paintings by the Whitneys, Riddles, Vanderbilts, Phippses, Wideners, and Willis Sharpe Kilmer. He painted Man o' War, Equipoise, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Sir Barton and Whirlaway. Some of his work can be found at the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame in Lake Worth, Florida.Completing more than 500 commissions in a period between 1920 and 1950, Voss died, as he would have liked - out foxhunting with the Elkridge-Hartford Hounds near his Maryland farm.
