Item Details
Description
Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Advertising Jar with Cobalt Deer and House Scene, Stamped "WM PECK / DRUGGIST & GROCER. / GLENS-FALLS N.Y.", attributed to J. & E. NORTON, BENNINGTON, VT, circa 1855, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a deer with spotted body and turned head, reclining atop a hill with split-rail fence below and a house with fence in the background. Shoulder impressed with advertising for the Glens Falls, New York druggist and grocer, William Peck. Cobalt highlights to advertising mark and capacity mark. Jar includes a 19th century, salt-glazed stoneware lid, probably not original to the piece, as it is stamped with a different capacity mark than the jar. The Norton deer motif remains one of the most iconic designs of the 19th American stoneware craft. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. A thin 2 1/2" crack above one handle. A tiny chip and nick to one handle. A tiny chip to opposite handle. Minor chipping to interior of rim and heavier chipping to inner rim, where lid rests. Some light bubbling to cobalt. Lid with hairline from edge and flake to knob. H (excluding lid) 12".
