Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, ca. 500 BCE. A red-brown terracotta rectangular double lobed vessel with a bridge handle between the lobes. A diminutive bird perches on the top front lobe, painted cream and with huge eyes, a short, fierce-looking beak, and a black face. The body of the vessel is also a whistle, which is still playable. Chorrera ceramics like this one often have well-finished surfaces, and this one shines. These ceramics represent a culture that spanned from the desert to the sea, but had a fairly uniform artistic tradition. Size: 8.75" L x 3" W x 8.1" H (22.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 20.6 cm)
