Description
Africa, Nigeria, Igbo, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A striking maiden spirit mask is finely carved with a visage intended to represent the ideal of female beauty, with dramatic facial features, scarification marks, a toothy smile, and an elaborate coiffure modeled after extravagant 19th century ceremonial hairstyles. Additional white pigment signifying that this mask is a spirit adorns the classic visage and a colorful original textile collar enhances its presence. Size: 8.5" W x 16.75" H (21.6 cm x 42.5 cm)
Agbogho mmwo or maiden spirit masks are traditionally worn by adult males in festivals that pay homage to significant deities. In addition to the masks, the performers don tight fitting and brightly hued costumes as they perform somewhat exaggerated and amplified versions of traditional female dances, all the while imitating the gestures and characters of adolescent girls. Such masquerades are performed each year during the dry season and accompanied by musicians. This mask is a quintessential example of an Agboghu Mmuo mask, highlighting the daintiness of a young lady's facial features, and it bears repeating that the whiteness of her complexion indicates that the mask represents a spirit.
