Description
East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th to mid 19th century CE. Absolutely gorgeous cast bronze, gilded menuki in the form of dragons twined around swords. On a katana, the menuki are ornaments designed to balance the grip, often partially concealed by the woven leather of the handle. These examples are wonderfully ornate, with scaly bodies, large eyes with eyelashes, and long whiskers. The dragon is a water deity in Japanese mythology, a symbol of power. Comes in custom box. Size of each: 0.4" W x 2.6" H (1 cm x 6.6 cm); size of box: 3.25" L x 5.6" W x 1.45" H (8.3 cm x 14.2 cm x 3.7 cm)
